BULAQ: A Podcast on Arabic literature in translation

Back in 2017, I started a podcast with my friend Marcia Lynx Qualey.

MLQ is a book critic, editor, translator, and literary consultant. She runs the blog ArabLit and the Arab Lit Quarterly anthology.

The podcast is named after the first active printing press in the region. Established in 1820, the Bulaq Press put out its first publication, an Italian-Arabic dictionary, in 1822.

Our podcast is an informal little labor of love. It’s a place to have the kinds of conversations about books we’d be having anyway. One of the things we enjoy about it is that we often have writers and translators on as guests, so we get to talk to people whose work we admire.

BULAQ is produced by the Sowt podcast network in Amman, Jordan.
